The Teaching Quality Evaluation Work in the Second Semester of 2014-2015

To the departments and schools concerned:

   In line with the requirements of a new round of "Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation in Colleges and Universities" and according to the guiding instructions of SEU leaders, a notice is hereby issued in order to strengthen the classroom teaching evaluation, speed up the faculty development and improve the quality of education.

  1. Guiding principlesBy a combination of classroom observation and performance evaluation of specifically chosen classes, the evaluation aims to cultivate a strong atmosphere of teaching quality consciousness across the university, and to build an effective mechanism for upholding and encouraging classroom teaching with the participation of teachers, students and administrators.

  2. Teachers to be ObservedSchools (departments) should attach importance to the supervision of classroom teaching and improve teaching effectiveness by the evaluation work. It is suggested that on the basis of comprehensive faculty evaluation, teachers on the top 5% and the bottom 10 % of the previous evaluation scale should get special attention so that excellent teaching examples can be set and specific measures can be given to those teachers who need help.

  3. Teacher ObserversSchools (departments) should attach great importance to the selection of teacher observers. Party committee and administrative leaders of each school (department) are suggested to coordinate the efforts of academic committee and teaching committee, as well as the help of outstanding teachers and some of the retired professors, to work out schemes and specific steps and fulfill the evaluation work by cooperation. At the same time, the university would set up a team of teacher observers this semester to evaluate the classes of those teachers who have gained special attention. The Center for Faculty Development will do the work of organization and coordination.

  4. Requirements

    • The teaching quality evaluation for this semester, starting in September, will cover all courses registered by Teaching Affairs Office.

    • Teacher observers of each school (department) should complete an Observation   Feedback Form (see Appendix) and hand it to the school’s teaching secretary. After collecting all the sheets, the teaching secretary should hand them over to the President’s Office during the 10th and 14th week. Then, the Center for Faculty Development will file a written report to the university leaders and administrative departments.

    • Schools (departments) should strengthen communications with the observed teachers and get the feedbacks from both the teachers and the students. Then, based on analysis and research, schools (departments) should work out plans and take practical measures to help teachers improve their teaching quality.

    • The Center for Faculty Development will provide different development programs for teachers, such as seminar, training courses, workshop, demonstration teaching and individualized teaching counseling. Teachers who are recommended by each school or those who volunteer to participate, please visit the CFD website to get to know about the form of application and program time.

    • The university is going to pay the retired professors for their evaluation work, but schools (departments) should offer appropriate subsidies to other class observers.

    • Before the end of this semester, together with the Teaching Affairs Office and Graduate School, the Center for Faculty Development will hold a seminar about the classroom teaching quality evaluation so that a platform could be built upon which more teaching experiences could be exchanged and more suggestions could be gathered. And this would offer some guidance to our next-phase work.
